Harley-Davidson tyre buying guide

How to compare cruiser, touring, road-sport and adventure tyres without confusing tyre marketing with approved fitment.

Independent editorial information — not an AnyBike recommendation or approval.

Companies and products mentioned are examples for independent research, not paid placements or assurances of quality, compatibility, safety, reliability or UK legality. AnyBike does not supply, fit, test, approve or certify these modifications. Verify manufacturer documentation and the exact motorcycle; seek assessment from a competent specialist and check insurance and legal obligations before purchasing or modifying.

Start with the exact motorcycle, not the badge

A Road Glide, Fat Boy, V-Rod and Pan America 1250 ST can require very different tyres. Check the owner's manual, original tyre designation, actual wheel sizes, load and speed ratings, construction, tube requirements and any manufacturer fitment restrictions. Tyre approval for one model year does not automatically cover another.

Tyres worth researching — not endorsements

Michelin lists Commander III Cruiser and Touring families for different custom and touring applications, plus original-equipment Scorcher tyres on various Harley-Davidson models. Metzeler markets CRUISETEC for V-twin cruiser applications. These are examples of ranges to research, not AnyBike recommendations, fitment confirmations or comparative test results.

Handling versus mileage and wet-weather priorities

Published manufacturer claims about warm-up, grip, durability and profile are not independent guarantees. Wet-weather conditions, rider load, tyre age, pressure, temperature and suspension condition all influence feel and performance. A tyre with a sportier profile is not necessarily suitable for every wheel or motorcycle.

The checks that matter before buying

Ask a qualified tyre specialist to confirm original or approved front/rear pairings, wheel compatibility, load and speed ratings, any required tubes, correct direction and suitable pressures. Don't mix tyre constructions or use competition-only tyres on the road unless the exact combination is legally permitted and approved. Inspect wheels, bearings, alignment and suspension as well as the tyres.

Why exact Harley-Davidson model and year matter

As an example of how different factory specifications can be, Michelin's UK motorcycle fitment catalogue lists a 2025 FLHX Street Glide with 130/60B19 front and 180/65B16 rear tyres, while a 2020 FLTRUSE CVO Road Glide uses 130/70B18 front and 180/55B18 rear. These are model-and-year-specific examples from a tyre manufacturer's catalogue, not a recommendation to fit these sizes to another Harley-Davidson.

Even motorcycles with similar model names may differ in wheel sizes, construction, load index and approval. Always check the exact VIN, wheel, handbook and manufacturer-approved tyre fitment, then ask a qualified motorcycle tyre specialist to verify it.
